What Life Changing Lessons have you learned from 2023?
As we stand at the precipice of this exciting new beginning, it’s crucial to reflect on the year we just had. What lessons have we learned from 2023 that we can carry forward to the new year?
As I reflect on my 2023, I discovered seven valuable life changing lessons that have reshaped my perspective and will guide me into 2024.
1. Respecting Boundaries – The Foundation of Self-Care
This year taught me the importance of setting and respectiving boundaries. Remember, prioritising yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
Let me say this again. It’s not selfish to prioritise yourself!
It’s an act of self-care that is necessary to protect your mental and physical wellbeing, which is essential for fostering better and healthier relationships with yourself and others. It is also mandatoty to communicate your boundaries while honouring others’ limits creates a foundation of mutual respect.
In 2023, I often stretched myself thin for my 9-5 (more like 7-11) job whilst accommodating other people’s boundaries. I learned that respecting my own time and space is not just okay – it’s essential for me to flourish.
2. Choosing Kindness Over Niceness
Kindness is a virtue and is an essential trait of elegance and ladylike. And kindness should start with yourself before others. Kindness is an intrinsic value that you live by and have compassion. It goes deeper than the surface layer of ‘being nice’.
Being nice is simply people-pleasing and to be liked. But it shouldn’t come at the cost of your own well-being. Constantly prioritising other people’s needs because you’re too nice to say no is being unkind to yourself.
The biggest life changing lesson I learned from 2023 was that being nice often led me to neglect my needs. Inspired by one of my favourite author and keynote speaker, Dr Lois Frankel‘s insights in “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office“, I’ve learned to balance kindness with self-respect.
There are so many gold nuggets in this book to help you navigate office politics with savviness. If you haven’t read this, make sure you add it to your 2024 reading list!
3. Embracing Failure as a Stepping Stone
I really don’t like the word fail because it has such a negative connotation. I prefer to see them as part of the learning process and use them as a stepping stone to your success.
2023 was a year of trial and error. I learned to embrace failure not as a setback but as a crucial step toward success. I am a strong believer in just giving it a go and learn from your mistakes. If you want to go for that promotion or start a blog, then just go for it.
Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back from trying new things. Each failure is a valuable lesson that propel you closer to your goals.
The main thing is having the resilience to respond to new circumstances and pivot yourself to the new environment. Whether it’s a career shift, a change in personal goals, or adapting to unforeseen challenges, having the flexibility to pivot is the key to success.
4. Asking “What’s In It For Me?” More Often
WIIFM. What’s In It For Me?
As a woman, we’ve been brought to be a nurturer, to be nice and to take care of people. Altruism is a beautiful thing. But it’s important to balance that with self-care and your personal goals.
This may sound self-centred, but it’s a vital question for personal growth. Frankly, we don’t ask this question enough.
2023, I completely lost myself and my goals in the wider organisational strategy, team goals and client deliverables. My 2024 will be a year of reassessing my personal priorities. And if the new strategy / decisions / actions no longer align with mine, then it’s ok to walk away.
Remember, it’s not just about you giving all the time. It’s also about ensuring that what you do aligns with your personal and professional goals. You always have a choice!
5. Safeguarding Your Intellectual Property (IP)
2023 taught me the value of my knowledge and experience. In a world where sharing is the norm, understanding what to share and what to protect is everything. Your intellectual property is the key to your career capital, aka your income! More on this in the upcoming section.
We often associate IP with creative work. For example, a photographer’s photos, an artist’s painting, or a blogger’s content/article. Your skills and experiences is your career capital and its a crime for people to steal them and try to profit from it. But what about the knowledge and experiences you’ve acquired over years, if not decades, from your 9-5 grind?
If you work in corporate, then you would be familiar with the term fungible workforce. This essentially means everyone in the team possesses similar skills and capabilities, making them interchangeable or dispensable. It removes key-person dependencies, which make sense from an organisation’s perspective.
This requires more experienced employees to invest time and energy into developing less experienced colleagues. But make sure you balance between being a good corporate citizen vs making yourself dispensable.
6. Navigating Through Uncomfortable Conversations
Difficult conversations are often growth opportunities in disguise. And they are necessary to discuss and manage issues. Avoiding necessary uncomfortable conversations can lead to dissatisfaction, and mistreatment of yourself or others, thus hindering your progress.
This year, I learned to approach these conversations with empathy and openness, leading to stronger relationships and self-understanding.
7. The Power of Small Consistent Steps
Success isn’t always about grand gestures. It is a building block of small, consistent daily actions that build over time. 2023 reinforced the importance of taking consistent incremental steps toward my goals is better than taking no action at all.
Another book I read in 2023 is called So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport where he talked about building your career capital so that you become indispensable. And your career capital is built by taking small incremental steps over an extended period of time. In fact, the sweet number to become so good is 10,000 hours or 10 years.
