Imagine standing on the black volcanic ashes of Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, with the Sicilian sun on your face and sweeping views of craters and vineyards around you. It’s a dramatic, powerful, and absolutely unforgettable. No trip to Catania is truly complete without experiencing this bucket-list wonder.

But since you’ve found your way here, I’m guessing you don’t need convincing. 😉 You already know you want to go. What you do need, though, is the most elegant and safest way to enjoy Etna without the chaos.

Should you rent a car and brave the Italian roads? Attempt public transport and risk delays? Or simply allow a knowledgeable guide to whisk you away in comfort, ensuring you see the highlights without stress?

If, like me, you are in your elegant, stress-free era and prefer to be whisked around Mount Etna, then this post is for you!

However, there are still an overwhelming number of options to choose from! So how do you choose?

I’ve done a ton of research, so you don’t have to, and concluded that a small-group private tour is the best way to thoroughly enjoy Mt Etna and it’s surroundings.

The most memorable trips (in my opinion) are the ones that seamlessly take you on a journey, hassle-free — no hidden costs, no confusion, and always with safety in mind. This is an active volcano, with eruptions as recent as June, at the time of writing. So safety was my number one priority when deciding.

In this guide, I’ll share the exact experience we had with this exclusive small-group excursion that my husband and I loved so much. This is not a sponsored post. I just want to share my experience in case this is helpful. As I know how overwhelming it is to find a tour with the right experience. All opinions are based on our personal experiences.

This Mt. Etna, Wine and Alcantara Tour with Lunch had everything we were looking for. It combines trekking on the craters of Etna, exploring the surrounding areas of the Alcantara Gorges and a Sicilian wine-tasting lunch at a Mt Etna vineyard, with hassle-free pick up and drop off.

Our Recommended Elegant Trip to Mount Etna from Catania

After weighing the options, my husband and I chose an exclusive small-group tour of Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorge with a Sicilian wine-tasting lunch — and it was everything I hoped for and more.

From the moment we were picked up, in a warm and cozy minivan (we travelled in December) from our Catania hotel, I knew this wasn’t going to be just another excursion. We were greeted by a charismatic local guide and expertise made the journey effortless — he knew exactly where to take us for breathtaking views.

We also made friends with our fellow travellers and went out for drinks & a meal after the tour concluded. There were 8 of us touring together, couples and solo travellers. If I were travelling solo, this is a great way to make connections with like-minded people!

The experience was perfectly balanced with a scenic walk across Etna’s volcanic landscapes, the craters (without the stress of navigating on our own), an enchanting forest of beautiful white birch trees, pausing every so often for stories and photos!

The whole experience felt private and special. New barriers broke down. New friendships were formed. And new bucket list items ticked!

Itinerary for the Day trip to Mount Etna from Catania

First Stop: Mt. Etna Hiking

Our guide picked us up from our gorgeous Catania hotel at about 9:00 a.m. (they also do pick up from an agreed meeting point if you’re not staying in central Catania). Once everyone is picked up, we make our way to our first destination — Mt Etna for some hiking.

We made a coffee stop at a winery, also our lunch spot, before heading up to the volcano. He led us through the phenomenal volcano tracks, 2000 m above sea level. We walked through ancient woods and white birch forest, on old craters and unique lava formations.

The guide points out unique viewpoints, summit craters in the landscape. It was a spectacular experience!

Second Stop: Visit Volcano Caves

We went underground and visited the volcano caves. The guide provided free helmets and a torch for us to use. He also explained how the volcano caves were formed through lava flows caused by the eruption. It was fascinating! Bring a jacket/coat. It was chilly down there!

Third Stop: Lunch and Local wine Tasting

For lunch, we went back to the winery where we had coffee in the morning. We had a typical Sicilian lunch made of fresh produce sourced locally, paired with Mount Etna wines.

If there was one negative thing about this tour was the lunch. I felt it could’ve been better organised. However, we did arrive at the same time as the others. So we had to fight for the waiting staff’s attention. In the end, our guide helped out with the running around, so it was very thoughtful of him.

Fourth (and final) Stop: Alcantara Gorges

Last but not least, we came to the beautiful Alcantara Gorges. The guide explained how it was formed thousands of years ago from the lava flow invading the bed of the Alcantara River.

As the steaming hot lava hit the river’s extremely cold water, the incandescent lava created this spectacular landscape. My photos don’t do it justice at all!

Sadly, we were there during winter, and the valley was a bit dry. But I’ve seen photos during summer, where people were splashing in the crystal clear water.

This concludes our trips to Mount Etna from Catania.

As we were there in winter, it got dark pretty quickly. On our journey back, we saw a red stream of lava flowing down from the top of the mountain — just to prove that it is a 100% indeed a live volcano!

We made it back in time to Catania in good time for dinner and to start our night activities. haha… We all went back to our hotels to freshen up before meeting again for drinks, dinner and pistachio cannoli.

I tried my best to capture the breathtaking views on camera for you, but nothing compares to seeing it with your own eyes and how the experience makes you feel.

My husband and I still remember the day fondly. It felt like an elegant adventure rather than a hecticc day trip. And it is the first thing that pops into our minds when we think back to our Sicily trip.

What I loved most was the sense of ease — no hidden costs, no worrying about transport or logistics, just a carefully curated day designed to let us enjoy Mt Etna in comfort and style.

Things to be Mindful Of…

So that’s all the good stuff. Now, what’s the catch? It would be remiss of me not to mention some of the cons that would’ve made the experience even better.

They weren’t deal-breakers for me, but I am sharing them with you, in case they are important to you. I want you to make an informed decision and go with your eyes open.

  • Less flexible: This is a given, as you’ve signed up to an organised itinerary for the day, and so did the other 7 travellers. Unless you plan to drive yourself or do a private tour, you’re going to be tied down to a timetable. That said, I didn’t feel rushed at all, even during lunch, and I am the slowest eater in the world; I felt we had plenty of time for everything, at a leisurely pace, just the way this elegant lady likes to travel! 🤭
  • Not completely private: This is not a private tour, and you can’t tailor your itinerary. But you won’t get a chauffeur and design your own itinerary at this price point. You’d be looking at 4 or 5 times the cost. If I had a bigger budget or for a special event (e.g. proposal), then I’d go private tour route. But this small-group tour is a great compromise. You’re not fighting with 45 other people on the coach. This is like you’re on an excursion with your friends. Nice, intimate and personal.
  • Lunch could be more organised: I mentioned this earlier. We ended up hitting the winery around the same time as all the tours, so it was hard to get served. This is not a deal breaker for me, as the star of the day was Mt Etna hike and the Alcantara Gorges. Lunch was supplementary.

Book now to experience it yourself

As I always say, travelling isn’t just about ticking off the bucket list. It’s about how you do it. This experience weaves in the very best of Mount Etna and its surroundings in the most elegant and effortless way possible.
